Getting Around SF (and the Bay)
Know every transport mode, what it costs as of July 2026, and when to use which — so you stop defaulting to $25 Ubers.
Day 1: get a Clipper card
Jargon: Clipper — the Bay Area’s universal transit card. One card (plastic, or in Apple/Google Wallet) works on Muni, BART, Caltrain, ferries, and buses across every agency. Add it to your phone wallet in two minutes; load $20 to start. Everything below assumes you have it.
The modes, priced
| Mode | What it is | Price (July 2026) | Use it for |
| Muni | SF’s buses + light rail | $2.85/ride with Clipper; $86/month pass ($104 incl. BART within SF) | Everything inside SF |
| BART | Regional metro | Distance-based; SFO→downtown ~$11 (sources range $9.65–11.15 — needs verification) | Airport, East Bay, Mission↔downtown |
| Caltrain | Commuter rail down the Peninsula | Zone-based; SF→Palo Alto ~$8–10, ~1 hr | Peninsula/South Bay meetings |
| Uber/Lyft | Rideshare (≈ Ola) | ~$17–25 typical cross-town SF | Late night, groups, luggage |
| Waymo | Driverless robotaxi via app | ~13% above Uber on average (avg ride $19.69 vs $17.47, Q1 2026); no tip needed | Same as Uber; solo night rides |
| Bay Wheels | Lyft’s bike share | $1 unlock + $0.19/min; e-bikes $0.49/min casual, $0.17/min for ~$14/mo members | Trips under 3 km, flat routes |
| Walking | — | Free | SF is 11 km across; most of your life fits in 3 |

When to use what
Arriving at SFO: take BART — ~30 minutes to downtown for ~$11 vs $45–70 by Uber. Arriving at OAK: BART connector to the Blue line. With 3+ bags or a family, just take the Uber/Waymo.
Daily life in SF: walk + Muni + Bay Wheels. If you ride Muni twice a day, the $86 monthly pass pays for itself (~30 rides). Buy passes on Clipper, not MuniMobile — single rides leave MuniMobile from August 1, 2026 (SF Examiner).
Hills and fog reality: SF’s hills are genuinely steep — check elevation before renting a classic-frame Bay Wheels; take the e-bike uphill. Fog (locals call it Karl) makes summer evenings 12–15°C: carry a layer, and cycling west (Sunset/Richmond) means wind and mist.
Late night: Muni gets sparse and some downtown stretches feel sketchy after ~10pm. Default to Waymo or Uber. Many people — especially women — prefer Waymo at night: no stranger in the car, ride is recorded, and you don’t tip a robot, which roughly closes the price gap on longer rides (InsideEVs).
Waymo basics: download the Waymo One app; it works across most of SF and is expanding on freeways (101, I-280, SR-92) — freeway routing may not be enabled on your account yet (Waymo Silicon Valley guide). The car unlocks from the app; luggage goes in the trunk you pop from the screen.
South Bay trips: Caltrain from 4th & King to Palo Alto/Mountain View/San Jose. Electrified trains run fast and frequent; pair with Uber for the last mile.
The car question
Living in SF city: don’t buy a car. Garage parking runs $300–500/month downtown, street parking is a permit-and-sweeping-schedule nightmare, and SF has a notorious smash-and-grab problem — thousands of car break-ins a month at peak (CBS News). The rule everyone learns: never leave anything visible in a parked car, not even a charging cable. Rent (Zipcar/Getaround/Turo) for weekend trips.
Living in Fremont/Sunnyvale/Santa Clara: you need a car. South Bay is built around driving; transit exists but doubles or triples every trip. Get your California driver’s license process started in month 1 — your Indian license works only temporarily.
Do this now
- ☐ Add Clipper to Apple/Google Wallet and load $20 — before you land if possible
- ☐ Download: Uber, Lyft, Waymo One, Transit (or Citymapper), Bay Wheels
- ☐ Take BART from SFO on arrival day instead of a $60 Uber
- ☐ If in SF: buy the $86 Muni monthly pass once you cross ~15 rides/month
- ☐ If in South Bay: start the DMV driver’s license process in week 2–3
Nobody tells you
- BART charges on entry and exit — keep enough balance to tag out, or you’re stuck at the gate adding fare at a machine.
- Waymo’s tip-free pricing means it’s often cheaper than Uber on rides over ~8 miles, despite the sticker premium — do the math on airport-adjacent and cross-town runs.
- The “don’t leave anything in the car” rule extends to empty bags and jackets — thieves break windows on the possibility of value. SF drivers literally leave notes and open gloveboxes to prove the car is empty.
