What To Do on Weekends
A practical menu of Bay Area weekends — hikes, day trips, city life, sports, and desi anchors — plus why weekends are where founder friendships actually get made.
First, the social mechanic: weekday events produce contacts; weekends produce friends. The standard SF move is to meet someone at a Tuesday event, then invite them to a Saturday hike or run. It’s a low-stakes, normal invitation here — use it. Almost every durable founder friendship in this city was cemented on a trail, a run, or a long lunch, not at a mixer.
Hikes near SF
| Hike | Difficulty | Getting there |
| Lands End (3.5 mi loop) | Easy | 38R bus from Salesforce Transit Center, ~40 min; no car needed |
| Twin Peaks | Easy-moderate, short but steep | In-city; Muni + a walk up |
| Marin Headlands (Morning Sun trail and connectors) | Moderate | Golden Gate Transit bus to Spencer Ave stop; trailhead 5 min from the bus pad |
| Mount Tamalpais | Moderate-hard, full day | Easiest with a car; transit routes exist via Marin |
Lands End is the default first hike: ocean cliffs, Golden Gate views, zero planning. The whole “hiking by transit” genre is well developed here — see sources — so no car is no excuse.
Day trips (drive times from SF)
| Trip | Drive | The move |
| Half Moon Bay | ~40 min | Coastal walk + seafood; whale spotting Dec–Apr |
| Napa / Sonoma | ~90 min | Wine tasting; book tastings ahead; designate a driver |
| Santa Cruz | ~90 min | Beach boardwalk + redwoods in one trip |
| Point Reyes | ~2 hrs | Dramatic coastline; elephant seals Dec–Mar |
| Tahoe | ~3+ hrs (more with winter traffic) | Ski weekends Dec–Mar; carry chains, leave early |
Tahoe is the founder-house-weekend classic: someone rents a cabin, eight founders split it, and the group chat that comes out of it outlasts the snow.
City weekends
- Golden Gate Park — rent bikes, hit the Saturday crowds; the Conservatory of Flowers is free the first Tuesday of each month.
- Museums on free days — de Young: first Tuesday free, plus first Saturday free for Bay Area residents; Asian Art Museum: first Sunday free. Full monthly list in sources.
- Ferry Building farmers market — Saturday morning institution on the Embarcadero; go before 10am, eat your way down the stalls, and you’ll likely bump into half of tech.
Sports as social infrastructure
- Run clubs — Founders Running Club, Saturdays at the Panhandle: 5k/10k pace groups plus a walking group, coffee after. The single easiest standing weekend plan for a newcomer.
- Cricket — yes, really, and it’s serious. The Bay Area Cricket Alliance (BACA) has run league cricket since 1999 with dozens of clubs, including winter T25 seasons; the California Cricket Academy (Cupertino/South Bay) anchors youth and academy cricket. Join a club as a player or just show up to weekend games in the South Bay — instant desi network.
- Pickleball — SF’s fastest-growing casual sport; public courts plus paid clubs, and a common founder-group activity. Specific court/club recommendations: [needs verification].
Desi weekend life
- Fremont / South Bay runs — the classic Saturday: temple, then Indian food. Fremont Hindu Temple (Delaware Dr) is a long-standing anchor, and Fremont has one of the deepest Indian food scenes in the country.
- India Community Center (ICC), Milpitas — the institutional hub of Bay Area desi life: gym, table tennis, carrom, Bollywood dance and yoga classes, language programs, senior programs, open 7 days.
- Festivals and shows — Garba nights, Holi, Diwali melas, Bollywood and Indian comedy shows run year-round across the Bay; aggregators like SimplyDesi list dozens at any time.
The honest geography: desi community density is in the South Bay and East Bay (Fremont, Milpitas, Sunnyvale); the founder scene is in SF. Most Indian founders end up doing SF weekdays and at least one South Bay weekend a month.
Do this now
- ☐ Do Lands End this weekend — no car, no planning required
- ☐ Invite one person you met at a weekday event to join you
- ☐ Show up to Founders Running Club on Saturday
- ☐ Put the museum free days (first Tue/Sat/Sun pattern) in your calendar
- ☐ If you play cricket, email/register interest with a BACA club before the next season
- ☐ Schedule one Fremont temple + food run and one ICC Milpitas visit this month
Nobody tells you
- The weekend invite is the actual networking move. “Want to join our Saturday hike?” converts a business-card contact into a friend — and it’s expected, not forward, to ask someone you met once.
- Bay Area cricket is oversubscribed — clubs literally compete over limited fields — so join a club’s roster early rather than assuming you can walk on mid-season.
- SF empties on summer weekends (Tahoe, Marin, wine country), so weekends are also when the city’s best events have the least competition — check the calendar before assuming nothing is on.
